Outlined geometric shape on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-weight black outline of an angular, house-like shape with a pointed top sits on the outer forearm, with stepped blocky linework extending down its lower left edge. The lines are solid and unshaded, and the ink is black against pale skin. The arm fills the right side of the frame against a plain textured white wall, with the hand extended toward the lower left.

The house on Scar Lane had been sliding downhill since the thaw, a foot a week by Tom Ockenden's reckoning, and the council wanted it recorded on a form that had no box for a house that moved.

He came up with a brass level, a tape and a tin of chalk, and set his pegs in the wet grass. Below the back wall the hill was cut into steps, each a ledge of grey stone no deeper than a loaf, running down in a neat zigzag towards the harbour. He counted nineteen. The house sat on the top one, its pointed gable squared to the sky, and when he pressed his palm to the stonework it was warm, like a cup someone had just put down.

Mrs Ferriby, who had lived there sixty years, brought him tea in a chipped cup and said the house always went down to the water at night and came back up before she woke. Her husband had gone out from the harbour in a boat called Patience and never returned, and the house, she said, was only looking for him. Tom laughed, then stopped, because a line of chalk he had laid across the top step at dusk was two blocks lower by morning.

He drew the house as it stood, angles and all, and found the stepped edge of the plan matched the stairs to the harbour exactly. He wrote no further action on the form. That evening he walked down the steps himself, counting under his breath, and behind him, very quietly, the house stepped down after him.
