Sitting cat outline on a lower leg

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A single black outline of a sitting cat seen from behind, with pointed ears and a tail that curls round and ends in a small loop. The linework is thin and continuous, with no shading or fill, and the skin is pale against a light grey background. The tattoo sits centrally on the lower leg, with the foot and a dark garment visible at the edges of the frame.

The cat was already on the refuge wall when the snow began, sitting with its back to the wind and its tail curled round its feet. You had climbed the north side of the pass against the advice of the woman at the valley farm, who said the gate was shut for winter and the cairns would be buried by dusk. The letter in your coat promised a man who would wait at the refuge until the light went, and you had never been good at turning back.

The door was open and nobody was inside. A kettle sat cold on the stove beside a ledger whose last entry was three winters old. You sat on the bench and watched the cat through the window. It did not flinch when the shutters rattled. It turned its head once, slowly, to look down the track you had climbed, as though counting the people who had not come up it.

When the light nearly went you stepped out to the wall. The cat did not look at you. Its ears were pricked toward the col, where a lantern was moving through the snow, small and steady. The shepherd had not left the refuge empty. He had left the cat to keep the door, and it was keeping it the way a thing does when it has been trusted with one job.

You turned up your collar and waited beside it. The lantern grew. Somewhere below, a bell sounded twice. The cat stood, stretched its long tail out straight behind, then folded it back in one neat loop and sat down again, facing the pass.
