Arrow and eye designs on hand and wrist

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands and a forearm are shown against a blurred green background, with small dark marks across the skin. A single arrow runs down the inner wrist, and a larger eye with chevrons and dots sits on the back of the other hand, with further arrows, a crescent and a diamond on the fingers. The lines are simple and even, filled in solid black with no shading, and the composition is shallow focus with the marks as the main subject.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been told the marks were for the children, so the children would not wander past the last stone wall. She carried the ink pot in her apron pocket, a stub of soot and gum, and every Sunday she walked the boundary of Hollin Edge with her brother's old brush. Where the beech roots broke the path she drew an arrow pointing home. Where the ground turned soft and wet she drew a chevron, two strokes like a bird's wings folded down.

Old Aggie had shown her the eye. "Trees see more than we do," she said, pressing a thumb against the bark of the great oak at the stile. "Give them something to look back at, and they'll keep to their own side." Nell painted it with a round lid and a pupil she filled in slowly, a dot at a time, until the ink dried dark and glossy. The dots were for the nights she counted, and the diamond was for the gap in the hedge where the fox came through.

The autumn the mill girl went missing, Nell walked the line twice in one day. The rain had softened the marks, so she redrew them with her fingers on her own skin, copying from the bark because she had nothing else. By dusk the arrows on her wrist pointed the wrong way round. She stood at the stile with her hand against the oak and felt the cold of the eye's centre, and she understood she had been drawing the wood's directions, not the village's.

She went back along the path with the lantern swinging. Halfway to the mill she found the girl sitting on a root, muddy to the knees, laughing at nothing. Nell took her hand, turned her palm over, and traced a fresh arrow in the dirt on her wrist, pointing home. "Keep your eyes on the marks," she said. "They know the way."
