Small spiral and simple shape on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a spiral sits above a simple stylised shape with a forked tail, possibly a bird or fish, on the inner forearm near the wrist. The linework is thin and solid black with no visible shading. The ink appears only in black against a light skin tone, and the tattoo is centred in a close, straight-on photo.

It flew straight past the porter's desk and round the curtain of bed four, where old Hettie Lusk lay counting her breaths. It circled the light fitting three times, a tight little whirl, the way bathwater goes down the plughole, and then it settled on the rail at the foot of her bed and looked at her with one black eye.

Hettie had kept the sea in a jar on her windowsill for fifty years, a handful of Cornish shingle and a whelk shell she would never let anyone wash. She said the bird was her late husband's sister, come to ask why Hettie hadn't finished the crossing. Nurse Dunmore laughed and fetched a cup of water. The swallow dipped its beak in the rim, drank, and went back out the way it had come, down through the gap in the sash with its forked tail opening like a fish turning in deep water.

By morning the sash was shut tight and the jar on the sill was wet with salt, though nobody had emptied it. Hettie said that was only the tide coming back for its manners.
