Small lotus flower on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small lotus flower sits on the inner wrist, drawn as a single thin black outline with simple pointed petals. The linework is even and unshaded, with the white skin of the wrist giving it strong contrast. The tattoo is centred in a close, slightly soft crop against a blurred grey background.

The mule stops again at the second bend, its hooves splayed on black ice, and you have to talk it up the last stretch with your palm flat against its neck. Your breath comes out in short grey pieces. Below you the valley is still in shadow, but the snow on the far ridge has already turned the colour of brass, and you know that by the time you reach the cairn the light will be full and the path will be a river of melt.

Old Dorje said the pass has a temper, and he was right about that, though he never told you it could be so beautiful when it was angry. He walked it for forty winters with salt and sugar on his back. Now his knees are wrapped in sheepskin in the lower village, and the keeping of the mule has fallen to you, along with the ledger he kept in a tin box: every crossing, every load, every name of every person who paid in coins or in eggs.

At the shelter you stop. The stove is cold, so you rub the frost off the small window with your sleeve and find that someone before you has scratched a flower into the glass. One clean line, a bud, petals pointed like the tips of a flame. You trace it with your fingernail. Whoever made it had steady hands and no need to shade it. Maybe they wanted anyone climbing up behind them to find it, or maybe they only wanted something on that bare pane that did not ask for anything back.

You take out the ledger and write the date, then the mule's name, then nothing else. The sun clears the ridge and the drawing catches the light, every line suddenly sharp. You leave the window as it is, lift the lead rope, and go on up toward the cairn, where the wind is already waiting.
