Small outline cat on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline tattoo of a sitting cat, drawn as a single thin line with no shading, sits on the top of a pale foot. A grey furry cat lies across the lower right of the frame, and the toenails have teal polish against a red blanket.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the cake, because Auntie Nell has never told this story without someone reaching for the trifle. Years back, on the hill above Carrick, there lived a grey cat called Morrow who belonged to nobody and sat wherever the sun was. The old men said she had never once been seen to stand up properly. She folded herself down like a letter sealed in wax, and the wind went round her.

The miller's son wanted to marry the baker's girl, but her mother said no man could be trusted with a bride until he had sat still long enough to be measured. So he climbed the hill each morning with a flask of tea and sat down beside the cat to wait. A week passed, then a month. The cat never moved and neither did he, and the gorse flowers came and went around them both like guests who had lost their way.
Then one grey dawn in October, Morrow rose, stretched until her spine clicked, and walked down the hill with her tail held straight up like a bell rope. The boy got up and followed her all the way to the baker's door, his boots loud on the cobbles, and by the time the bread was out of the oven the whole street had come to look.
Morrow climbed the step, turned three times, and sat down again, her tail curled neatly round her feet. The baker's wife looked at the cat, then at the boy, and said nothing at all. Nobody argues with a cat who has made her mind up, and nobody in Carrick has tried since.
