Fine line cat outline behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A single-needle style black outline of a seated cat, with pointed ears, whiskers and a long curling tail, sits on the skin directly behind the ear. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The photograph is taken from behind the subject, with the cat centred on the neck below the ear and dark hair framing the upper left.

Ada had been told the cat would only sit still if she never lifted the pen, so she kept the nib on the paper and let her breath go shallow. Mr Tolley at the stationer's in Harrow Sallow had sold her the quill and a pot of iron gall ink with the warning that most people who tried it gave up by the second ear.

The cat was meant to be the one from the wood. Everyone in Harrow Sallow knew the old beech line at the forest edge, where the path stopped and the trees began to lean in. Grandmother said a grey cat had sat on the stile there every evening of the hard winter, watching the lamps come on in the cottages, and that nobody ever saw it arrive or leave. Ada had never seen it. She had only ever seen the tail, a single curl of shadow slipping between the trunks.
She drew the ears first, two sharp points like folded letters, then the back in one long unbroken sweep that ran down into the tail. Her hand ached. The lamp guttered. At the last curl she felt the line want to run on past the edge of the page, and she let it, and the tail went off the paper and into the grain of the table.
Morning came with a knock. Tolley stood on the step holding a small grey cat that did not seem to belong to anyone. The stile was empty, he said, and the cat had walked straight to her door. Ada looked at the drawing and saw that the tail had come out the other side of the page, thin and black, and she could never after rub it away.
