Sun and yin yang on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet rest on white sheets, one showing a sun outline with wavy rays around a black and white yin yang circle that has a small blue-green dot. The second foot has a cluster of tiny outlined stars along its side, and a braided black cord is tied around the ankle. The thin, even linework and mostly black ink give the tattoos a delicate look, and soft rainbow light falls across the frame.

Marta Pell lit the oven at Hollin Lane every night before the stars had finished going out, because her grandmother had told her the sun was lazy and would only rise once there was bread on the sill to tempt it. Her brother had gone to sea years ago, and the bakery had been hers since, with flour in the seams of her apron and nobody to argue with about the salt.

The trouble that winter was honey. Ilse Brandt kept bees on the far side of the beck, and she had promised a jar for the Midsummer loaves, then promised again. Marta did not like to ask twice. So on the morning the sun stayed hidden behind the hill, she sat on the step with a cup of cold tea and watched the lane go from black to grey to a colour with no name.
Then she heard the gate, and there was Ilse with a jar wrapped in an old shawl, saying nothing about the delay. Marta took the jar and scored the last two loaves, one dark with rye and one pale as a moon. She pressed a dot of honey into the crust of each, a black dot in the dark loaf and a white one in the pale, so that the halves would always know where they belonged.
They carried the loaves out together. The stars were thin now, and the sun came over the hill with rays of fire that trembled like wet ink. Marta broke the pale loaf and gave Ilse the dark. The steam went straight up into the still air, and behind them the oven ticked as it cooled, while the sun, satisfied at last, climbed a little higher.
