Small outline heart on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline sits on the inner wrist of a hand held palm inwards. The heart is drawn in a thin, even black line with no shading or fill. The plain background of a sofa and a wooden cabinet keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The band at the Palais de Ruth had run out of waltzes by eleven, so Dennis Hale played the same slow number twice while the cloakroom girl counted coats. Maureen had been watching the door since eight. Ray Coppin was late, which was no surprise, and when he finally came in with rain on his collar he went straight past the dance floor to the pay box and asked Mrs Ellis for a pen.

He had no paper, so he took Maureen's hand at the edge of the floor, turned it palm up under the bulb, and drew a small outline heart on the inside of her wrist. The ink came from the fountain pen he used for the ledger at his father's ironmonger's. The top of the line wobbled where he lost his nerve, and the curve on the right came out thinner than the left. "It'll wash off," he said. "Everything does."
They danced until the lights came up. She kept her hand flat against his chest the whole time so the ink wouldn't smear his good shirt, and that was the first thing he noticed about her and the last thing he forgot. Outside, the sea was hissing against the prom wall. He walked her to the bus stop and didn't try to hold her hand again.
In the morning the heart was still there, faint and blue-grey. She left it alone through the week at the mill office, through the wash, through the long Sunday when her mother asked what the mark was. Ray came back for the summer and then didn't. The ink faded to a ghost within the month, but Maureen never let anyone scrub it away.
