Small outline sun on the inner wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a small sun drawn in black linework on the inner wrist, with a circle for the disc and short straight rays around it. The lines are thin and even, and the tattoo is sharply defined against pale skin. The background is a dark blue-grey surface, and the hand is raised with yellow painted nails at the top of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The rain has been at Brightwell since Whitsun, and Mr Pardoe at the chemist's swears the barometer has given up believing in July. I have been drawing suns to keep my spirits up. You would laugh. I have sketched them on the backs of invoices, on the flour sacks, on the margin of Mother's hymn book, always the same: a plain ring and six straight rays, nothing fancy, because you told me once that a sun only needs enough lines to be recognised.
Last Thursday the Ferris girl came into the shop with her little brother, who had cut his palm on the bread knife. While I dressed it she asked if I would do one on her wrist so she could show the other girls at the Co-op. I did it in ink from the shop pen, a circle the size of a shilling with eight rays, and she held her arm up to the window and looked at it for a long time, as if it might warm up.
Then the sun actually came out on Saturday, the day of the fête, and everybody stood about in their Sunday coats blinking like moles. I thought of you out past the breakwater on the trawler, and I hope it found you there too.
Write back soon. The sun I drew on my own wrist has already faded, so I did it again this morning, very carefully, with the same six rays. I shall keep doing it until one of us gets the real thing.
Love, Margaret
