Sun outline tattoo on the back of a hand

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A simple black outline of a sun, with a plain circle and pointed, flame-like rays, sits on the back of a hand. The linework is single-weight and unshaded, with no added colour. The hand rests on a white bedsheet, with three patterned silver bangles on the wrist and dark red nail polish.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the coal scuttle. Your great-grandad Tom went down Aldwick Pit for thirty-one years and never once saw the sun on a working day, not from the first shift in March to the last in October. So he brought one down with him.

It was Nan Ellery who did the pricking, at the scrubbed table with the gas hissing under the kettle. She had a darning needle and a bottle of Indian ink from the chemist on Front Street, and Tom sat with his left hand palm down on a folded tea towel and never once flinched. She drew the circle first, round as a halfpenny, then the rays went on freehand, sharp and wavering, like the flame of the safety lamp when the air goes thin down the face. Tom said they had to be flames or they weren't worth the ink.

Mr Carrick, the overman, saw it at the pithead baths and said a man marked like that would bring a fall down on the whole district. Tom just held his hand up under the cage lamp, the back of it turned to the men, and grinned. The ink took the light the way gold leaf does on a church roof.

When he came up at night the bank would be black and the wet slag steaming, and Nan would be waiting at the gate with the kettle on. He'd lift that hand and she'd tell him the sun was late again. Every time she said it, and every time he laughed.
