Small outlined clover on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo
A small, fresh tattoo of a three-loop motif, resembling a clover, sits on the side of a finger. The design is drawn in thin red-pink outline with no visible shading, and the skin around it is slightly reddened. The finger is wrapped in clear plastic film against a red and white checkered floor in the background.

Ivy Carrow had the bread knife in one hand and the ledger in the other when the baker's boy came in, shaking rain off his cap onto her red and white floor. He wanted a loaf on tick. She told him the bank had a better sense of humour than she did, then wrapped the loaf anyway, because his mother had once slipped her a clover pressed flat inside a letter, and nobody on Harrow Street forgot a thing like that.

The clover had three leaves, always three, Ivy said, because her grandfather had counted them out on the back step with a stub of chalk. A fourth leaf was for luck, and luck was not something a shop could run on. Three was for the trade: the baker, the milkman, the woman who sold wool from the back of a cart. Every Friday she drew a fresh one on the back of the order slips in red pencil, outlined and empty, and nobody ever asked her to colour them in. That was the arrangement, and it had worked for forty years.
The winter the flour ran short, she stopped drawing them. Harrow Street noticed before she did. Three days later the baker's boy came back with the money in a twist of paper and a red pencil of his own, asking how the loops went. His first loop was too big and the stem wandered off the edge of the slip. She let him finish it anyway. Outlines hold, she told him, you only ever have to decide where the edge goes.
