The last of the squid was still sliding across the deck when Skipper Hale held out a tin of black enamel and told you to draw the mouse on the wheelhouse door before the tide turned. You were nine, or near enough, and the Scarborough boats were already tying up along the harbour wall with their nets hung out like washing.

You drew it freehand with a sable brush, two round ears, a round head, and a bow perched on top. Hale grumbled that mice were bad luck at sea, everybody knew that, but you said it wasn't a mouse, it was a bow with a face underneath it. So you went below to the engine room, scraped a little red lead from the bilge pump's old paint pot, and worked it into a drop of linseed until the bow sat solid and bright against the grey.

The weather came in on the third night off Flamborough. The boat rolled until the crockery in the galley sang, and the wheelhouse door banged on its hinge all night. When you limped into port with the hold half empty, the outline was still there, every thin black line of it, and the red bow had held through the spray as if it had been waiting for the sea to tell it so.

Hale never painted over it. Every spring, when the Kittiwake Rose goes back in the water, somebody new gets handed the brush and told the mouse is for luck. You still don't correct them, though you know it was never luck you wanted, only a bit of red to find in the grey when the fog came down.
