Dear Nell, the rain has come sideways across the Saturday market for three days now, and I have sold one brass thimble and a pair of gloves that were never going to fit anyone but old Mr Dobbs. The tarpaulin over my stall keeps sagging with water, and every time I push it up, a fresh cold river runs down my sleeve. I am writing this under the counter, where it is dry, with the tin of Father's carving tools open beside me.

On Thursday a young customer came by with a folded sketch of a wolf's head, creased soft from being carried about. She wanted something small enough to sit on a finger and sharp enough to make the pigeons think twice. I have carved plenty of foxes and owls for the tourists, but I had never tried a wolf that small. I spent the whole of Thursday evening on a scrap of boxwood with the lamp pulled close, cutting the ruff in tiny grey flicks, then pricking the eyes with a bradawl until they looked back at me, pale and patient.

She came back this morning, the rain still needling the awnings, and turned the little head over in her palm without a word. Then she slid it onto her finger, held the hand up to the grey light, and smiled as if someone had told her a secret. I have left the sketch pinned to the board behind me. The wolf's ears are still pricked, as if it has heard something on the road and is waiting for the shutters to come down. Do come and see it when the weather clears. I will keep the lamp on for you.
