Small palm tree on a finger
Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black silhouette of a palm tree sits on the side of a finger, with the fronds and trunk rendered as simple dark shapes. The hand is raised in a loose gesture, with pale mint nail polish on the fingertips. The background is out of focus, showing green foliage and a bright sky, and the warm daylight lights the skin.

At the Hollin Park comprehensive reunion, in the function room of the Railway Hotel, Denise Burrow had brought a carrier bag of photographs nobody had asked for. She laid them out beside the sausage rolls like evidence. Most were from the school trip to Tenerife in 1994, when the coach broke down on the way to the volcano and the teachers bought everyone ice lollies from a garage.

Maureen, who had been Denise's best friend until the Christmas of 1996, picked up a print of the two of them under a palm tree outside a hotel with a broken sign. The tree was thin and leaning, and someone had tied a pink ribbon round its trunk for the photo. 'You still got that ring?' Maureen asked. They had split a silver band between them, one half each, and a promise about getting out of Hollin together.
Denise had not got out. She had got a job at the Co-op, then a mortgage, then a husband who sold conservatories. Maureen had gone to Almeria, then Perth, then nowhere anybody could follow. Denise said nothing for a while. Then she showed the small black palm inked on the side of her finger, done years ago at a kitchen table by a lad from the market who charged twenty pounds and a bottle of Bacardi. 'I thought it would look daft,' she said. 'It doesn't. It just means I went somewhere once.'
Maureen laughed until she had to sit down, then fished her half of the ring out of her purse on a chain. Outside, wind came off the river and rattled the windows, and somebody put on Abba too loudly. Maureen took a napkin, wrote the dates of the Tenerife trip on it and underlined them twice, which was how they had always made plans.
