Small palm tree tattoo on a finger

Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is raised in front of a palm tree and a clear blue sky, with the fingers curled loosely together. A small solid black palm tree silhouette with a curved trunk and fronds sits on the side of one finger. The ink is dark and crisp, and the pale mint nails and warm sunlit tones make up the rest of the colour in the frame.

The last train to Penzance has gone, and you are the only one left under the iron roof of platform two, the lost property box open across your knees. Beneath the umbrellas and the single odd glove sits a postcard nobody has claimed in eleven years. It shows a palm tree leaning over a harbour wall, the sky printed so blue it looks wet.

Mr Tremayne, who worked the signal box before he retired to Hayle, once told you the card came off the 6.40 from Paddington, wedged down behind a seat cushion. Someone had written a single line on the back in pencil and never signed it: Keep the sun for me. You have read it so often the pencil has rubbed grey at the edges.

Tonight the rain comes sideways off the Atlantic and the station clock is four minutes slow. You take the nail scissors from the drawer and cut the palm tree free of its harbour, leaving the trunk and fronds as a dark little silhouette, small enough to balance on the tip of a finger. You pin it to the timetable board beside the Plymouth departures, where it looks almost like a bird until the first milk train rattles in.

At six the porter asks what the scrap of card is. You tell him it is a forwarding address. He laughs and goes off to put the kettle on, and you do not explain that the card was never meant to go anywhere, only to be kept safe by someone who needed to believe the sun was still out there, on the far side of the weather.
