Small palm tree tattoo on the ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph taken from behind shows two legs in white Converse All Star trainers on a pavement. A small palm tree silhouette in black ink sits on the back of the lower leg, just above the ankle. The palm is drawn with a clean outline and a solid trunk, and the image is in black and white with strong cast shadows across the ground.

The palm came down the coast road on the back of a flatbed lorry, wrapped in hessian like a relation nobody had invited, and by the time Ray Pargeter from the parks department had signed for it, half of Saltmarsh Bay had come out to look. It was four foot of trunk and a crown of fronds the colour of pencil shavings. The council had voted for it after a councillor's nephew came back from Tenerife with a photograph and a grudge.

The first frost took two fronds and the second took a third. Ray bought a roll of horticultural fleece from the farm shop out past the caravan park and wrapped the trunk every night, then drove back each morning to unwrap it, the way you might check on a lodger. He talked to it. He wasn't proud of this. By February the sixth formers had started photographing it against the grey sea, and a woman from Leeds tied a bag of satsumas to the railings with a note that said keep going.
On the first warm afternoon in March the sun came over the pier and the palm threw a shadow the length of the promenade, across the pavement, over the bench and up the side of the chip shop. Ray stood in it with his sandwich. He didn't tell anyone that he had stopped eating his lunch in the van.
He wrote to his sister that evening on the back of a council form. Tell Mum it's doing fine. Don't send me a postcard of the real ones. I'll only want to go.
