Small paw print tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand rests on a white surface, with a dark sleeve at the wrist. A small paw print tattoo sits on the middle finger, drawn in thin black outline with light grey shading in the toe pads and a tiny heart in the upper pad. The background is plain white, and the silver glitter nails and gold band on the ring finger add colour to an otherwise neutral frame.

The narrowboat Marigold had been moored at Brentwick Lock for three days when the lock-keeper's terrier came down the towpath and sat on Nell's boot as if it had paid for the seat. She was scraping weed from the bow with a bread knife, cursing the damp, and she nearly dropped the knife. The dog had one white ear and one brown, and a small tuft of rust fur on its chest shaped like a heart.

"That's Biscuit," said Owen from the lock gate, hauling his windlass over one shoulder. "He goes wherever there's a boat with a stove. Says it's the only warm place in England."

She fed the dog the crust of her sandwich and he followed her back along the cut, pressing his paw print into the frost on the roof hatch every time she stopped to look at the water. By the afternoon there were prints all the way from the lock to the Marigold, a neat trail of pads and tiny hearts, and Owen came out to see them with his hands in his pockets.

"He's leaving his mark," he said. "That's what Dad always called it. A dog that sits on your boots means you're staying."

Nell looked at the trail and at the boat she had meant to sell in March. She pressed her own hand into the damp at the stern and then took it away, leaving the print sharp and small beside Biscuit's. The river went on past them, brown and unhurried, and she left the bread knife on the roof where she would find it in the morning.
