Small cat face tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a cat face sits on the side of a finger on an outstretched hand. The design uses simple solid triangles for ears, dots for eyes and nose, and thin lines for the mouth and whiskers. The background is a blurred grey surface and a dark sleeve, with the hand the clear focus of the photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ennu had drawn the same cat on the granary tallies for eleven years, and in all that time it had never once looked at him. He pressed his reed into the wet clay beside the barley counts, two dots for eyes, a small line for the nose, and the rest of the account waited below in neat wedges. The overseer wanted sacks counted, not animals sketched in the margins, but Ennu kept at it, because the cats of the warehouse row were the only creatures in the city who never asked him for a loan.

The trouble began when the grey tom from the fish sheds stopped coming to the granary door. Ennu's daughter Sirat, who was nine and had a sharp tongue, said the cat had gone off to find a better scribe. She took the stylus from her father's basket and pressed three quick triangles into the clay, two ears and a nose like a cut seed. Then she dragged her thumb through the soft mud to make the whiskers, three to a side, the way the tom held his when he was pleased with himself.

That evening Ennu carried the tablet out to the step to let it dry in the cooling air. The grey tom was already there, sitting on the threshold with one paw tucked under his chest, watching the lamps come on along the quay. When Ennu looked up from the clay, the cat had turned his head to match the drawing exactly, ears up, eyes narrowed, whiskers bristling in the dusk.

Sirat clapped her hands and said nothing about the overseer. Ennu did not mention the cat either. He only scratched a second line beneath the barley count, a small tally mark for the tom, and let the lamplight settle over both of them.
