Jack-o'-lantern tattoo on a finger
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is held up with two fingers extended, and a tiny black jack-o'-lantern face sits on the side of the second finger. The face has two triangular eyes and a jagged toothy smile drawn in solid black ink with simple, clean edges. The background is plain and pale, so the small design stands out clearly against the skin.

Sit yourself down on that bollard and mind the wet, for the cut runs cold once the light goes. You'll want to hear about the autumn the Haskell girl would not go through Braunston tunnel. Nine years old, and black as a coal hole inside, and she'd sit on the cabin step with her knees under her chin and refuse to stir until her father lit the lamp and sang.

Her brother Eli was the one with the knife. He took a swede from the field above the towpath, hollowed it on the cabin roof with a spoon and a length of mucky string, and cut two triangles for eyes. The mouth took him the whole evening. He kept sawing and tearing the wrong way until the thing grinned at him like a drunk pig, and he said that was the best it would get and he'd not waste another swede.
They stood a stub of candle in it and lashed it to the bow rail. Past the tunnel mouth the whole boat went dark except that small crooked face bobbing ahead of them, and the girl stopped crying to laugh at it. Every lock after that she'd ask whether the lantern had seen the gates yet.
Eli carried it down the cut for three winters, until the swede shrank to a black skin. When the boat was sold, the new owner found a little face scratched on the underside of the bow board, two triangles and a grin with one tooth missing. Nobody on the water has ever scrubbed it off.
