A small solid black paw print with four toe pads and a larger main pad sits on the side of a finger, shown against pale skin. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, the lot of you, and stop tapping your glasses. Mrs Pryce, put that biscuit down, this is a story about a dog and it's older than your hip. There was a collie called Nell who belonged to nobody in particular, though the whole of Ceredig swore she belonged to the Vaughan boys. Nell liked to walk the lane between the mill and the chapel every morning, nose down, tail up, as if she was carrying the parish's news in her mouth.

The wedding in that tale was the miller's girl, Gwen, and the groom was a carter who could not say a whole sentence without looking at his boots. On the morning of the day, the ring went missing. Gwen had taken it off to wash her hands in the leat, set it on the mill step, and the leat took it, as leats do. Everyone searched the reeds. The carter wept into his hat. Nell didn't search. She walked straight to the water's edge and sat, and she would not get up until someone looked where she was looking.

Mind now, here's the turn. The ring was not in the reeds. It was in the mud of the lane, pressed into a soft print the rain had not yet reached, because Nell had been carrying it all morning in her mouth, the way she carried everything she loved. Four toe pads and a big heavy heel, and in the middle of them, a little gold circle the size of a barley seed.

So they married that afternoon, the carter slipped the ring on and Gwen laughed so hard the vicar had to wait. And if you go to Ceredig, they'll show you the lane and the stone where the dog sat down. Now, Mr Owen, your glass is empty, and so is the story. Raise it to Nell, who never once asked for thanks.
