World map tattoo on the inner wrist

Hand · Colour · Photo

A hand is shown from the palm side with the wrist and forearm visible against a plain dark grey background. A tattoo of a world map, with continents shown as solid silhouettes, sits on the inner wrist. The ink is a single warm brown tone with soft edges, and the composition is tightly framed on the wrist.

The snow had buried the lane to the village by four o'clock, so Maren stopped pretending the coach would come and went back to the kitchen to scrape the last of the potatoes. Behind the bar of the Hollin Arms hung the old chart of the world in its warped oak frame, stained the colour of weak tea, with the continents shaded in brown ink like islands of toast. Her grandfather had copied it from a merchant's original the year the railway came, and he had never let anyone touch it.

Guests trickled in through the storm: a surveyor from Carlisle with frozen boots, two nuns who wanted only the fire, and a young man called Teodor who said he was walking to Lisbon and had been walking since Michaelmas. He asked to see the chart. Maren lifted the hatch, and he stood over it a long time, tracing the coast of Africa with one finger, then the Indies, then the thin pencilled line of the overland route her grandfather had meant to finish.

"It's wrong about the sea," Teodor said. "The Caspian is too small."

"It's always been too small," Maren said. "That's why nobody ever came back to fix it."

He laughed, then didn't. In the morning, when the lane was dug out, he had gone, leaving his boots by the stove and a folded sheet on the bar. It was a copy of the chart redrawn by hand, with the Caspian swollen to its proper size and a small ink mark at Lisbon. Maren pinned it beside the old one and went to put the kettle on.
