Small chevron tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a hand making a loop with the thumb and index finger, with a tiny tattoo of two stacked chevrons pointing upwards on the side of the middle finger. The linework is thin and dark grey to black, with simple geometric shapes and no shading. The background is a blue patterned fabric and a dark, blurred surface, with several thin gold rings on the fingers.

Sit down by the peat, the lot of you, and stop pulling at the dog. You want to know why the path to Scarrow Well has two arrows cut into every second stone? Then hush and listen, because my mother told me this on a night just like this one, with the fog pressed against the window like a wet fleece.

Nessa Ruadh kept the lamp at the top of Ben Corr. One March her husband took the boat out to the skerries, and the mist came down behind him so thick a man could not see his own oars. She went up to the cliff with a hammer and a cold chisel and cut a chevron into the rock at the first turning, then another above it, both pointing up the hill, the way a person climbs when they want to come home. Every fog after that, she walked the path and cut a pair more, until the whole way up was marked like the rungs of a ladder.

The folk laughed at her. Who needs a sign on a path they walk every day? Then one evening the fog came in so fast that Duncan Grieve, who had never once climbed that hill without a lantern, found those marks under his boots and followed them all the way to the door of the lamp house. He swore after that they were not for the walkers at all. They were for whoever was lost, so they would know which way was up.

Nessa never came down from the lamp room again, and her husband's boat was never found. The chevrons are still there, worn soft by weather. So when the fog rolls in, you keep your eyes low and look for the points. Now, who wants the one about the seal?
