Skipper Tully reckons he followed the Morning Star from Newlyn before anyone noticed him, a brown and white lurcher with one ear that won't lie flat. We feed him pilchards off the sorting table. We came in short on Tuesday. The weather turned off the Wolf and we lost two days and most of the hake. Standing on the slipway with the empty fish boxes, I counted prints in the wet sand by the steps, four toes and a pad, going down into the tideline and back out again, as if someone had stamped the harbour wall to show us the way home.

I'm writing because he went down the slip this morning and didn't come back up, and I think he has gone out to meet the boat that didn't make it in. Don't tell your mother yet. I'll be home Friday with the pay, and the dog too if he'll have me. If he won't, I'll bring back his bowl and a fish for the gull who stole the last one. Your loving husband, Joe.
