No, sit down, the lot of you, the tent's not closing till I've finished. Where was I? The cutting. Seventy years back this fair pitched on the Mill Meadow at Hollin Cross, and a girl called Nell Ashby came across the stubble carrying a biscuit tin with a wet rag in it. Inside was a single stem off the old pear tree at her grandad's place, the one the council meant to fell. Two leaves on it, no more, and she'd cut it at the joint so it would root.

She walked the whole fair asking for a pot. The rides man said no, the fortune woman said no, and the strongman's wife gave her a jam jar with a crack down one side and said, you'll want the water changed every morning, and mind the light. So Nell slept in the wagon with the jar on the sill and talked to it like a sister.

The fair packed up on the Tuesday and went on to Gorsley. Nell never went back for the jar. But every spring after, a sprig came up in the verge by the Mill Meadow gate, thin as a hair, with two leaves reaching for the sun, and it's still there, mind, if you go looking. The pear tree's long gone. Nobody knows what the thing is. I reckon it knows where it came from.
