Two small cats on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of two cats sitting side by side, shown in profile and facing the same way. The linework is simple and the cats are filled with grey and black ink, with little shading. The ankle fills most of the frame against a dark, blurred background.

Nobody in town knew whose they were. The baker said they came in with the salt traders. The old woman at the well said they were a debt paid in kind, and she would say no more.

Where the road crossed the dry wash, a man in a blue coat stopped his mule to offer them water. He had a tin cup and a long face. He asked which of them was the leader. The grey cat looked at the dark one, and the dark one looked at the road, and neither turned its head. The man laughed and said that was the answer he expected from anything that had never been given a choice.
They walked on. By afternoon the heat rose off the sand in sheets, and the road shook like a river that had forgotten how to run. The cats did not hurry. They had never hurried. Behind them the mule was still drinking from the wash, and the man was still standing there with his cup, calling out that the road had a bend in it further on, if only they'd wait and see.
They did not wait. At dusk their two shadows lay end to end across the white road, one following the other, and neither of them had once looked back to check whether the other was still there.
