You learned on the first wet Tuesday of October that the parlour piano at Halloran's had two personalities, and that neither would admit to being out of tune. Your mother had told you to keep the lid shut in the mornings, because damp got into the hammers, but the two guests who had taken the back rooms for the month had other ideas. Mrs Ferrier, who taught infants in Whitby and sang like a kettle that wanted to be heard, played everything in the treble. Mr Abney, a retired lighthouse engineer with hands like shovels, insisted on the bass, and every evening the two of them sat on the same stool and argued about the middle.

"It's a sea of a note," he said, the night you came in with the tuning fork. "Everything meets there or nothing does." You knelt by the case with the fork against your knee, listening while the wind rattled the sash, and found the A that had drifted flat in the cold. Mrs Ferrier watched you over her spectacles. Mr Abney watched the rain. Neither spoke while you worked the pin, one tiny turn at a time, until the string stopped wobbling and sang clean.

When you stood up they were already playing, her right hand high and bright, his left low and grumbling, the two lines of the stave lifting toward each other over the one note they shared. You let the lid down gently. On the fogged window beside the piano someone had drawn a small heart, the high curl of a treble clef and the two dots of a bass clef folded into its shape, and the damp had not yet begun to take it back.
