Purple flower sprig on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A small sprig of purple blossoms, each with tiny petals, trails along a thin grey stem that curves from the ankle toward the top of the foot. The linework is delicate and the flowers are softly shaded in violet and pink tones, with the stem and leaves drawn in fine grey lines. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a dark textured towel, with the foot and ankle filling the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The carter's daughter had walked the Salt Road since the rains failed, and by the third week her sandals were more string than leather. Her father had left her at the well at Ysolo with a donkey that would not stop looking back over its shoulder, and a sack of dates tied to its saddle. The donkey was the first to die, somewhere past the dry lake, and she walked on beside its empty saddle because nobody had told her she was allowed to leave it.

On the fourth morning she found a stem growing from a crack in a grey boulder. It had thin grey stalks and small violet blossoms, each petal no bigger than a fingernail, and it had no business being alive so far from water. An old woman sitting outside a hut of stacked stones watched her crouch beside it. "Those grow where someone turned back," the woman said. "Take one if you need it. Leave the rest for the next one."

She picked a single sprig and wrapped its roots in a wet rag, then tied the rag to the strap of her sandal so the flowers rode just above the dust. Each dawn she checked the petals, and each dusk she poured a little of her water over the cloth. The stem did not wilt. Four days later, at the gates of Harrow, a well-keeper asked what she carried, and she held it up for him to see.

He looked at the blossoms for a long time, then at the road behind her, the pale line of it running back to the lake. "Nobody comes in with anything green," he said. She took the sprig to the dry mouth of his well and pressed it into the rubble at its lip. By the next rains there was a thread of violet along the whole stretch of the Salt Road, and the donkeys, she heard, stopped looking back.
