Small quotation marks tattoo on the back of a hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand rests on green grass, with a small tattoo of two quotation-style marks on the back, near the knuckles. The marks are drawn in thin black linework and sit alone with plenty of skin around them. The composition is a close, outdoor shot with a wearer's sleeve and white canvas trainers visible at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pruett keeps the visitors' book at Brine Lodge the way other women keep church registers, and she has opened it on the breakfast table at your page. Nine days you have been here, and nine days you have said almost nothing, which she has noted in a neat black hand. Beneath that, in the same ink, is a line you do not remember: 'The tide is a liar and the gulls are worse.' Your name sits above it, set apart as if you were the one who had said it.

You try to recall the evening. The back parlour window was open, the sea grey beyond the railings, and the old typewriter under the stairs had been clacking since supper because a boy in the room above was finishing a letter to someone in Leeds. You had passed him the ink. Perhaps you had spoken. Perhaps the house, which swallows everything said within its walls, had simply returned your voice to the page with the punctuation tidied.

Mrs Pruett taps the page with one finger. 'Those are yours,' she says. 'I only transcribe.' You take her pen and, in the margin, add a correction: a small closing mark after the gulls, then an opening one before the word worse, so the remark can no longer be pinned on the sea. It is a foolish thing to do, but the tide comes in under the window, and for the first time in nine days you have something worth quoting.
