Tiny music note on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand raised towards the camera, showing a very small dark tattoo on the inner wrist that resembles a single music note. The linework is thin and solid, with no shading, and the ink is black. The subject sits low in the frame against a soft, blurred green background, with a dark strap on the other arm at the bottom edge.

You want the one about the fiddler who was owed a note, do you? Pull your stool closer, the fire's gone low and the stew's still warm. Old Mattie Harrow played the pier-end bars at Saltcombe for forty winters, and the only thing she ever kept from the sea was a single crotchet she'd found scratched on the underside of a rowing boat, a small black stroke with a tail like a hook. She reckoned it was the last sound a drowned boy had tried to hum before the tide took him.

She carried it in her head for years and never once got it right on the strings. Every time she tried, the tune came out a half-step wrong and a shade too sad, so the publican's wife would throw her a look and the dancing would stop. Then one February the harbour froze in the night and a lad came up the steps with his sleeve torn and his hand bleeding, begging for someone to stop the ice from cracking the hull of his father's boat. Mattie went down with her fiddle under her arm, and she played that one wrong note, the crooked one, loud enough to carry across the ice.

The ice held, or so they say. The boat came in on the spring tide, every plank whole, and the lad's father swore the note had rung out of the water like a bell. Mattie never played it again after that night, and when they buried her the lad had the mark inked small on the inside of his wrist, where a pulse would sit under it. Mind your step on the way out. The ice always remembers who sang to it.
