You find the radish wrapped in a page of an old seed catalogue, rolling against the dashboard of a van nobody has claimed since spring. It is still firm. Out here, where the tarmac shimmers like spilt oil and the nearest tap is a day's walk, you turn it over in your palm and decide it counts as water.

The road runs south for another ninety miles before it remembers it is a road. You drive with the window down and the radish on the passenger seat, its two pale leaves bending towards the vents as if they are listening for something. A lorry passes without slowing. A dust devil crosses the verge, lifts a flattened drinks can, and drops it again. You talk to the radish about the price of diesel and the sister you have not rung since Easter.

Near the edge of the dry lake, the signal returns long enough for one message from a woman called Maren Hollis, asking whether the van ever got home. You type that it has. You do not say who you are driving it for. When you look up, there is a thin green line along the horizon, which is only a lone saltbush the wind has missed for years.

You kneel in the grit beside it and push the radish into the ground at its roots, leaving the round red top showing above the sand like a brake light somebody forgot to switch off. Then you sit on the bumper and let the engine idle a while longer than you need to.
