Cat playing with red yarn on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo of a cat sitting on a rust-red ball of yarn, with a single red thread running from the yarn to the right and looping across the forearm. The cat is drawn in thin dark outlines with light, unshaded fill and simple facial details. The plain dark brown background keeps the small design in clear focus, with the skin lit evenly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ottoline Pike had knitted nothing since the spring the church roof fell in, so when the grey tom from number twelve came through the open scullery window and sat square on her basket of wool, she let him stay. He had opinions about the ball of rust-red yarn she kept for mending the gate stile, and he batted at it until one end came loose and the thread went skittering across the flagstones, out the back door and down the lane towards the harbour.

She followed it, of course, because a woman of seventy-one does not leave a good yarn to the gulls. The thread ran past the bakery, under the chandler's cart, through the legs of two fishermen mending nets, and finally looped itself twice around the mooring post at the end of the quay. Ottoline sat down on an upturned crate to catch her breath. The tom came sauntering after her with the ball of wool still tucked under one paw, looking pleased with himself and not at all sorry.

The old harbourmaster, Wilf Abney, watched her wind the thread back up with the patience of a woman who had buried a husband and not one ounce of her temper. "That cat's been stealing my bait twine since May," he said. "Reckon he's found his calling."

Ottoline tied off the end in a neat bow and handed Wilf the ball. "Then you'd better keep him in twine," she said. "I'm not knitting another thing for a cat who only wants to be carried home by the tail." The tom blinked at her from the top of the post, unrepentant, and the red line ran slack and bright across the cobbles between them.
