Small red poppy on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small red poppy head sits near the wrist on the inner forearm, shaded in a soft red with a few darker petal lines. A single thin dark stem runs diagonally down and away from the bloom, ending in a fading point. The plain light background and dark clothing at the edge keep the focus on the tattoo.

Nobody on Skerra could say who first planted the poppies along the cliff path above the kelp store. They came up thin and red every June, one bloom to a stalk, and the old women said they grew only where somebody had been waiting too long for a boat.

Anna Gorrie kept the lamp at the north point and counted the poppies the way other people counted hymns. The spring her brother Tam sailed for the mainland with a borrowed coat and a promise to write, she found one bloom already open at the gate, its stem bent toward the water as if it were pointing him out to sea. She picked it and set it in a jam jar on the sill.

Each morning after that she cut another. The jar filled, then the windowsill, then the mantel, and still the stems came back up through the cracks in the path. Her neighbour Ruth said it was a poor sort of grief that grew faster than a wall could hold it. Anna said nothing and wrapped the stems in damp newspaper for the ferry.

In August the ferry came back with a single letter and no Tam. Anna walked the cliff with the last bloom in her coat pocket. Where the path ran out into the grass, she laid the flower down facing the sea and left it there. By morning the wind had taken the petals one at a time, and the thin green stalk still pointed the way he had gone.
