The cutting lived in a sweet tin wedged between the spare fan belts and my mother's stockings. She said a fair without something growing in it was just a field full of noise, so every Monday, before she counted the takings from the dodgems, she checked the tin and tipped a splash of water over the stem from the thermos lid.

It had come off a bush behind the almshouses in Dunmow, where a widow with a bad hip had given it to us for two bob and a promise to bring her the first bloom. We never did. The rose kept being nearly ready, a bud fat as a thumb with its red going dark at the tips, and we kept moving on before it opened.

The last September we wintered in a vicarage paddock, the cutting finally put down roots in a jam jar on the caravan windowsill. My mother was already sorting the spring circuit when the letter from the hospital came, and she spent that evening telling me where the cash box keys were kept and nothing at all about herself. In the morning one petal had loosened, red as a boiled sweet, and she pinned the whole bud to my collar with a safety pin and said I was to take it up the lane.

I walked it to the almshouses the next day, the bud still mostly shut. The widow took it in both hands, looked at it for a long time, and said it was the first thing anyone had brought her in years that wasn't a bill.
