Small red rose with stem and leaves

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A small rose on a slender stem with two or three leaves, shown in soft red, pink and muted brown ink. The petals have a watercolour-like blend of shading, and the fine stem and leaf outlines are light and delicate. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against pale skin, with a hand with red nails resting at the top edge and lace fabric at the right.

The ledger was too heavy for one pair of hands, so Marian set it on the potting bench and let the pages fall open where they wanted.

Inside, between a 1974 invoice and a column of cutting dates, a rose lay pressed to the thickness of a bus ticket. Its red had faded to the colour of weak tea at the edges, but the centre still held a blush, like a cheek after the cold. Her father had pressed it the summer hail took the glasshouse roof. Beneath it, in soft pencil, he had written: “Last bloom of the Ellis red. Don’t let Mum throw it out.”

She had come to Cley to sell the place, not to read it. The agent wanted the ledger gone with the sheds. Still she kept turning. A sprig of rosemary. A receipt for two bags of bonemeal, paid in buttons. Every leaf had a date beside it, and her mother, who had kept nothing else of his, had kept none of these.

On the last page was a rough sketch of a single stem with three leaves and no flower at all. Under it, in the same careful hand: “Start again in spring. You always do.” Marian folded the page back over the pressed rose, put the ledger in the box marked keep, and carried his pencil out to the car. It was still sharp. She left the sheds standing another week.
