Small scallop shell tattoo on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small scallop shell is tattooed in black ink on the sole of a bare foot, near the heel and arch. The linework is simple and fine, with the ridges of the shell shown by short dark strokes and light shading. The foot rests on pale beach sand, and a real grey scallop shell sits in the lower left of the frame for comparison.

The pilgrim shells were sold by the dozen from a tin bucket outside the chapel at Saltmere, and my grandfather never walked past without buying one. He said a scallop was the only map a man needed, its ribs running out from a single point like lanes from a market town. Every summer he pressed one into the wet sand above the tideline and told me to follow its grooves home.

On the last afternoon of August I lost him on the flats. The tide had turned while we argued about whether the far rocks were worth the walk, and when I looked round he was a grey shape wading past the groynes, bucket swinging, calling that he had found something. I went after him with my sandals in my hand. The sand filled in our footprints as fast as we made them, so by the time I reached the rocks there was no path back except the one I could feel under my feet.
I found him crouched at the edge of the channel, turning a scallop over and over in his fingers. It was the largest I had ever seen, its ribs worn smooth as piano keys. A faint blue smudge marked the inside lip, a name and a year gone pale. 'Somebody thought it was worth keeping,' he said, and pressed it into my palm. 'Carry it back. The tide has to answer to whoever's holding the map.'
We walked in the last of the light, water sliding over our ankles and filling the hollows as quickly as we left them. I kept my thumb on the ridges the whole way, counting them like beads. At the tideline I set the shell down on the dry sand, and when the next wave came up it stopped a hand's width short, leaving the shape of the scallop printed in the wet, sharp as a stamp, and I knew which way we had to go.
