Small scallop shell tattoo on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black scallop shell sits on the side of a foot pressed into sand. The fan-shaped shell has radiating lines of fine black linework with a simple outline. The skin is warm toned and the background is pale sand, with a real grey scallop shell placed beside the foot for comparison.

The keeper's boy had walked the whole length of the tideline before the bell rang for the second watch, and still he had found only broken cockles and a crab with one claw. His grandmother said the sea kept its best things for those who did not look for them. He did not believe her, but he sat down on the wet sand to rest his legs and dug his heel in without thinking.

Under the sand lay a scallop, its ribs fanned out like the folds of a closed umbrella, and it was perfect. He carried it up the hundred and twelve steps of the lighthouse in his fist. At the top the lamp was turning, throwing its white arm across the water, and his grandmother was polishing the brass with a rag that smelled of paraffin.
"Pilgrims used to carry these," she said, not looking up. "Stuck them on their hats so the sea would know they were headed somewhere holy. Every ship that comes round the point has one nailed to its prow, if the captain's any good."
He set the shell on the sill. That night a fog came in thick as wool, and the lamp could not cut through it. Out past the rocks a fishing boat was calling for a light. The boy took the shell and held it up to the glass, the way his grandmother had shown him to angle a mirror, and the ribs caught the beam and scattered it in a hundred thin lines across the mist. The boat turned. It came in on the spokes of light, one by one, until its keel grated on the shingle below.
His grandmother looked at the shell for a long time, then put it in her apron pocket and never gave it back.
