Dessie had been keeping the rose alive since March, which was when the council stopped paying the man who watered the balconies. Fourteen floors up, the pot on the ledge of Flat 11B was the only green thing for two hundred yards, and it had one bloom, pink as a boiled sweet, bent over the railing as if listening for traffic.

She had bought the bush from the garden centre on Sheen Road with the last of her Christmas money, telling herself it was for the kitchen window. But the kitchen faced the car park and the rose wanted sun, so every morning she carried it out to the balcony in both arms, and every evening she carried it back in before the wind got up.

On the Thursday it rained sideways and she forgot. She found it at dawn, the stem snapped at the base and one petal lying on the concrete below, caught on the wire of the bins. She went down in her dressing gown with her trainers unlaced. The petal was damp and perfectly shaped, a small pink teardrop against the grey, and when she looked up at the tower every window was still dark.

She carried the petal back up in her cupped palm, set the broken stem in a jam jar on the kitchen sill, and turned it so the bloom faced the car park. By June it had put out two new buds, and the car park, Dessie decided, could look at them as much as it liked.
