Small scallop shell tattoo on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests in pale sand with a small, solid black scallop shell tattooed on the sole near the arch. The shell is drawn with simple radiating lines and a clean outline, and its dark ink stands out against the skin tone. A real grey scallop shell lies in the sand in the lower left, echoing the tattoo's subject in the bottom-left of the frame.

The shell had been in Maud's coat pocket since the Tuesday the ferry was cancelled, and by the time the bus put them down at the edge of the Pilgrim's Road, Jack had stopped asking her to give it back. He had his own: a scallop from the Sussex shingle, cracked at one ear, which he kept threaded on a bootlace round his neck.

They walked the first week on the hard shoulder of the old coast road, where the tarmac gave way to gravel and the gravel to chalk. Maud counted lighthouses. Jack counted the times she said she would turn back, which by Thursday was eleven and by Saturday had stopped altogether. She had a bad hip and a worse temper, and the shell she carried had come off her father's fishing boat, the Mary Ellen, the summer before it was sold for scrap.
On the ninth morning the path climbed out of the dunes onto a headland of pale stone, and there was a rock pool below them full of sun. Maud sat on a bollard, unlaced her left boot and set the shell in the hollow beneath her arch, where a publican in Kent had once told her the old pilgrims pressed their badges into the dust to say they had arrived. She pressed down. When she lifted it away, a small dark print of the ridges stayed behind on her skin.
"There," she said. "Now we can go home."
Jack didn't ask which home she meant. He only watched her lace the boot back up, slowly, the way you do when you are in no hurry to be finished.
