The queen's wedding gown had been cut wrong three times before the steward came down to the lower street and asked for Hanne, the tailor's youngest, who was said in Velmark to cut straight without a chalk line. She was seventeen, with ink on her thumb from her father's ledger, and she went up to the palace with her shears wrapped in grey cloth at her belt.

The shears had been her father's, small and sharp, their blades thin as a heron's wings when they opened. He had taught her one rule: never cut what you have not first folded. So she laid the silk over the long table in the queen's sewing room, folded it twice, and smoothed the crease with the flat of her hand. Under the lining she found a thread of gold that belonged to no season the palace had known, and a stitch in the old king's colours, the blue and rust the council had burned from every banner in the land.
The steward said the queen wanted a new cut, not the old pattern. Hanne said the old pattern had been right all along, and that the wrong cuts had been made to hide something. She did not say what. That night she unpicked the lining with a needle no thicker than a hair, and by morning the gold thread ran in a neat line along the hem, where anyone who looked could follow it.
At the wedding the queen turned once in the doorway, and the hem swept the flagstones without a single wrong fold. Only the old seamstresses read the thread, and they wept into their sleeves and said nothing. Hanne stood at the back with the shears closed at her hip, feeling their small weight like a thing that had finally been put to work.
