Heart and paw print tattoo on a foot

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink heart containing a paw print sits on the top of a bare foot, with curling vine-like swirls extending down and to the left. The linework is fine and clean, with soft shading inside the heart and the paw pads. The photograph is in greyscale against a dark background, showing the toes with white painted nails and a silver ring on the second toe.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last sign we had left was a tin heart nailed over the wagon door, and Mrs Ostrander wanted it kept, so I spent the wet March afternoon up a ladder scraping flakes off it with a penknife. Below me the big top sagged in the rain like a wet hen. Nobody came to see the lions any more. We had two, both toothless in the ways that count, and one performing dog called Tuppence who could still walk on her hind legs for a bit of cheese.

Tuppence had a habit of pressing her front paw onto the ink pad by the box office and then onto every ticket we tore, so the crowds that did come left with a paw print in the corner of their stubs. Mrs Ostrander said it was the only advertising we ever paid for and the only thing that never went out of date. When the ink ran dry in February, Tuppence walked the length of the caravans, stopping at every door, until Ostrander found a fresh pot in the wagon of a dead strongman.

On the last night in Boston, the rain stopped for the first time in a week. Tuppence trotted into the ring alone, circled the sawdust once, and lay down on her side in the exact spot where she used to take her bow. Nobody clapped. Mrs Ostrander sat on an upturned crate, smoked, and said nothing for a long while.

In the morning I took the ink pot and the last clean ticket from the box and pressed Tuppence's paw gently to the pad, then stamped it. I pinned the ticket to the wagon door beside the tin heart, where it still curls at one corner, and nobody has had the heart to take it down.
