Small ornament and dots on fingers

Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo

A hand with fingers spread rests on a light blue floral fabric, showing a small ornamental tattoo wrapped around one finger, with a symmetrical, mandala-like pattern. Single dots sit on two other fingers, and the linework is fine and precise with no visible shading. The ink is a dark reddish brown, and the warm, soft lighting keeps the composition simple and centred on the hand.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nan kept the pattern on a card with nine pinholes to every round, and she never once let me count them aloud. Counting was for people who had not yet learned to feel the thread turn under the bobbins. I sat at the pillow with my knees against its hard round edge and watched her hands move faster than the clock on the dresser, the little wooden sticks clacking like a tally of something nobody had told me.

The ring she worked was no bigger than a thimble's mouth, a flower folded in on itself, petal after petal turning back towards the centre. Each dot on the card marked a pin, and each pin held a knot that would either sit true or drag the whole round out of shape. Mum said the old women in the village could tell a lie from a lace by the evenness of the spacing alone. Nan said the same was true of people, though she never said which of us she meant.

The summer I turned fourteen I moved one dot. Just one, a fraction to the left, on the round that would close the border of the good shawl Nan had promised to my cousin. I told myself it was a slip of the hand, and by the Friday it was too late to unpick without the whole edge puckering like an old sock. Nan held the finished piece up to the window for a long time and said nothing at all.

Then she unpinned my cuff from the pillow, tied off the last thread, and set the shawl across my knees. "Now it's yours to answer for," she said, and went back to her own pins.
