Small script lettering behind the ear

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up of a small tattoo of stylised script letters behind an ear, with the letters arranged in a loose, curving cluster. The linework is thin and dark grey to black, with no shading, and the tattoo sits against soft, warm skin tones with dark hair on the left. The composition is tightly cropped on the ear and tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The scrivener of Harrow Fen had one good quill and a horn of ink that thickened every January, so when the miller's daughter asked him to write her wedding name in the old flowing hand, he told her to come back when the weather turned. She came back the next morning with the ink bottle wrapped in her shawl, still warm from her own kitchen fire, and sat down on the bench as if the matter were settled.

Tobias Gale had been taught that a name should stand upright like a fence post, but Alis Corrow would not have her letters stiff. He wrote the A first, then let the L bend back to lean on it, and the second letter curled round the first like a dog settling into straw. Her mother wanted the banns read in plain capitals. Alis said the church could read what it liked, tucked the wet slip of paper behind her ear while the ink dried, and laughed when it stuck there.

They married at St Ebbe's in the grey end of March. The ink dried to a soft black that no rain could lift, and the wedding guests agreed the curls looked like a small flock of birds sitting on a wire. Tobias never wrote another name so loosely, and the other scriveners said he had lost his nerve.

Forty years later, when his hand shook too much to hold a quill, Alis still turned her head in the market to show anyone who asked. The letters had faded to grey and the curls had softened into little more than a hook, yet she said it was the only name in Harrow Fen that had never once needed correcting.
