Pisces zodiac symbol behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of the Pisces zodiac symbol, two curved arcs joined by a diagonal line, sits on the skin just behind the ear. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink reads as solid black. The photograph is greyscale and close-cropped, showing the ear and hair with the tattoo placed in the lower centre of the frame.

The lamp at Skerrin Point had been dark since Tuesday, and Maud Pascoe had the brass lens half polished when the boats came round the headland without Ewan's. She climbed the iron stairs two at a time, sure she had miscounted, and from the gallery she saw them clearly: two dinghies making for the channel, one ahead and one astern, joined by a length of grey tow-rope that the swell kept lifting and dropping like a line of washing.

She lit the wick by hand because the striker had gone damp, the third match catching with a smell of sulphur. Her father had always said the lamp should be turned before anyone asked, so she wound the clockwork and watched the beam swing out over the kelp beds and the drowned bell buoy until it found the little boats and held them there. Ewan's oar lifted in the light. Tam was rowing with his back to the rock, as he always did, because he never trusted a thing he could not see coming.
When they tied up below, Maud came down with the logbook under her arm. She found the knot first, a double hitch their grandmother had taught them both, the cord doubled back on itself so the two ends ran opposite ways like fish turning in a tide. "You towed him in," she said. Tam shrugged, rope burn across both palms. "He was the one who saw your light."
She wrote the entry in pencil that night: wind south-west, lamp lit late, both boys home. Then she underlined the word both, because it was the only word in the book she had ever needed to keep.
