Red rose on an arm in a mirror selfie
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A woman takes a mirror selfie on a staircase, holding a silver phone in her raised right hand, with a black handbag and denim jeans visible. A realistic red and pink rose with green leaves sits on the inner arm near the elbow, shaded with soft gradients. The cropped composition shows the torso and arm, with colour ink dominating against the white top and dark jacket.

Dear Nell, the big top came down in Pontefract on Tuesday with half the canvas still wet from Sunday's rain, and Mr Vell stood at the gate counting ticket stubs as if they might turn back into coins. We are three wagons now. The elephant went to a farm near Selby. I have kept the rose you painted on the lead cage door in March, the red one with the pink blush at the petals, because nobody thought to paint over it, and the paint has held better than the rest of us.

Lorcan wants to sell the trapeze rigging to a scrapyard in Hull. He says the rope is rotten, which is true, but he says it the way he says everything now, looking past you at the hedge. Last night he sat on the step of the blue wagon trying to whittle a new hoop stick for the dogs, cut his thumb, swore, and then laughed for a long time with his head down. I bound it with a strip of silk from the spangled cloak. It was the first thing he has let me do in a month.
The leaves on your rose are a green nobody mixes any more. I held the lamp up to it last week and thought of that morning in Ripon when you climbed the ladder with the tin of pigment on your hip and told the whole yard that roses never wilt if you paint them in a hurry. We have had a hard winter. The rose is still there.
Come in June if you can. Bring the tin. We will paint the wagon wheels yellow and tell the children the show is still on, and perhaps it will be, a little, for one afternoon. Yours in the last of the sawdust, Peg.
