Small semicolon tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black semicolon sits on the inner wrist, angled towards the thumb side of the arm. The linework is clean and fine, with the dot and comma mark filled in with solid black ink and no visible shading. The warm, slightly faded photo shows a gold-toned chain bracelet above the tattoo and a pale paved ground in the background.

Brother Anselm held the printed book close to the candle, as though it might be hot to the touch. The Venetian press had sent it north with the wool carriers, and somewhere in its third chapter, after a sentence about the price of tin, sat a mark no scribe at Saint Edmund's had ever made: a comma with a full stop perched above it, like a sparrow on a fence that had not yet decided to fly.

"It is a pause that wants to be a stop," said Prior Hollis, who had read the Latin twice and the vernacular once. "We have no use for a mark that cannot make up its mind."
Anselm said nothing. For thirty years he had cut quills, ruled lines and copied other men's words without once adding his own. He knew how a single wrong stroke could travel through a book, and how a monk who took a liberty would be remembered for it long after the liberty was forgotten. Yet the mark sat on the page as calm as a held breath, and it seemed to say that the sentence before it was not finished, only resting.
That night he wrote to his sister Margery in Ely, who had buried two husbands and kept a goose called Bishop. The harvest had failed on the low fields; the bell at Saint Edmund's had cracked in the frost; he did not yet know whether he would be sent to the infirmary. Between the first sentence and the second he made the strange new mark, carefully, and sanded it dry. He did not explain it. He left the second sentence open, the way a door is left open for someone expected.
