Small crescent moon on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, single crescent moon is tattooed on the inner wrist, shown in a thin black outline with no shading. The arm is held up against a plain wall, with a wooden floor and a string of warm fairy lights softly blurred in the background. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame and is the clear focus of the photo.

Nobody on Quarry Lane had ever seen Mrs Ada Pell watering in the dark, but the marrows knew. Every night after the last bus, she carried a tin can down the allotment path, past the runner beans and the leaning cold frame, and filled it at the standpipe while the sky above the chimneys went the colour of weak tea.

The trouble began in the August the moon went thin. Ada noticed first that the bean leaves were curling at the edges, then that the slugs had given up on the lettuces and moved to the chard, as if someone had told them where the good food was. Her neighbour Dennis said the moon was pulling the sap out of everything. Ada said Dennis had never once looked up from his shed.

So on the last night of the month she took the old brass hinge off the gate, bent it into a sliver the size of a thumbnail, and hung it on a nail above the water butt. In the morning the bean stalks had straightened. The slugs had gone back to their own corner. Ada stood with her can dripping at her boots and thought that a moon did not need to be in the sky to do its work.

By the first frost the gate had a plain steel hinge, and the brass sliver was gone from the nail. Ada never found it. She liked to think the moon had taken it back, the way a magpie takes a button, and that somewhere over Leeds a thin bright crescent was hanging a little lower than it should, keeping an eye on the beans.
