Small skull tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a leg in white high-heeled shoes, with a small black skull tattoo on the ankle. The skull is drawn in thin, simple black linework with little or no shading. The warm sepia tone and soft light leave the background and shoes pale, so the tattoo stands out as the main point of focus.

He had been the boy who drew skulls. In the back row of Mr Pryce's chemistry lesson he had done them in biro on everything: jotters, the inside of his pencil case, the lid of his desk. Nobody had thought it strange, least of all Joanne Hale, who had asked him to draw one on the cover of her geography book so the supply teacher would leave it alone. Then she came across the hall in white court shoes with heels like pencils, and he saw the small skull, drawn in the same thin line he used to press into paper, and he had to look at the raffle drum for a while.
He had never really given her one. He'd meant to draw it on her hand at the Christmas disco, but she'd laughed and said her mum would kill her, and the moment passed the way those moments did. Now she stopped at the table, asked what a strip of tickets cost, and said, "You still doing those?"
He said he had stopped. She said she hadn't. He tore off ticket number forty-seven, took the biro from beside the cash tin, and drew a small skull in the corner. She folded it into her palm without looking, and the ink was still wet when she closed her fingers over it.
