Fine line script tattoo on a lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Two lines of thin black cursive script run diagonally across the lower leg, just above the ankle bone. The linework is fine and even, with little shading, and the lettering is slightly soft and blurred at the edges. The photograph shows the leg and red patent high heels against a striped rug, with the tattoo as the main focus.

The letter came down the cut on the Thursday, wedged under the tiller bar of the narrowboat Wren, folded small enough to fit in a matchbox. You knew the hand before you opened it: Dora's slanting cursive, the loops tight as barbed wire. She had always written as if ink cost money, and she had never once used a full stop where a dash would do.

The lock keeper at Bratch had seen her leave a fortnight before, you read, with a tin of pilchards and a crate of lemons, bound for the wide water past Tewkesbury. She wanted you to know she had not gone off with the Hollis brothers after all. She had waited on the towpath until the mist lifted, then walked the last mile into the market town alone. The thing she had come to say was written on the back in pencil, half smudged by the damp: meet me where the willows bend, if the boat is still yours.
You kept the Wren moored for a week. You scrubbed the cabin, blacked the stove, and repainted the roundel on the side in red and green, the way her mother used to. On the seventh evening a figure came down the towpath with a carpet bag over one shoulder, stopping every few yards to look at the water.
You did not run. You put the kettle on, the way you would for anyone who had come a long way, and waited for the knock. Some letters only mean something once the person who wrote them climbs aboard.
