Minimal line cat on an arm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a simple sitting cat drawn with a few loose, tapered black strokes, with small dots and a cross for the eyes and nose. The tail curls around the base of the body and ends in a thin sweeping line. The design is shown in black ink on pale skin, with plain negative space inside the outline and a patterned fabric edge at the upper left.

The cat is already on the sill when you turn into Mercer Lane at ten past two, folded into itself the way it always is, tail wrapped round its feet like a dropped scarf. You have been repainting the shutter of the closed pharmacy for three nights now, and the cat has watched every stroke with the patience of a building inspector. Its face is two dots and a cross, which is more than most of the lane's residents bother with.

Tonight the shutter is finished except for the last letter. Your brush is loaded with a black that dries matte, and the wet pavement throws the lamplight back at you in long yellow ribbons. You crouch to test the stroke on a scrap of card, and when you look up the cat has stood, stretched, and come down to sit at the kerb beside your tin. It does not look at the shutter. It looks at the drain, where a fox's prints lead off into the dark, and then back at you, as though you are the one who has been slow.

You ask it what it wants. It says nothing, which seems fair, since you have been talking to a shutter all week and have stopped expecting replies. Instead it leans out and taps the tin with one paw until the lid rocks. You take the hint and finish the R, the last stroke tapering to nothing as you lift the brush, and the cat rises, as if the work had been its own.

When you stand, the lane is empty. The cat has gone, but on the cold stone of the sill where it sat, a smear of rain has caught the lamplight in the exact curve of its tail, and you leave it there for the morning van to find.
